Peeled Onions

Moulton Bulb co. Launch skinned onion in Waitrose. With all of the quality and provenance you would normally expect,  the onions in the 500g pack now have their skins removed. This is not a fully prepared product as the base plate and stem are left intact. However, it will give the customer greater flexibility to slice or dice or even use whole as they wish. It also saves on waste as they can simply wash the bulb and then chop it up, giving a lot less messy experience to preparing an onion.

Onion Crunch

Onion growers in Lincolnshire are shedding tears of joy as more cash-strapped families turn to home cooking.

And they and other local producers are planning to increase production as more people become creative in the kitchen and swap ready meals for DIY dinners.

Supermarket bosses have seen onion sales increase over the past month by between 10 and 80 per cent at Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbury's.

And the surge has been put down to people trying to save money and also taking tips for good home cooking from celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay.

Brother and sister Robert and Sarah Oldershaw grow 200 acres of onions near Spalding. They supply Asda, Waitrose and the Co-op.

"We grow onions, potatoes, cauliflowers, cabbages and sprouts for the retail trade," said Mr Oldershaw, who is spokesman for British Onions producers' association.

"I believe that during the credit crunch people have cut down on eating out and are making more dishes themselves."

Marjorie Stein and David Lucas of Eden Farms at Old Bolingbroke, near Spilsby, grow around 60 varieties of organic vegetables, sold through box and bag delivery schemes and at farmers' markets.

Ms Stein said: "We have never been so busy with our box scheme as over the past few months.

"People are finding that cooking meals for themselves can save money and be good nutritionally too."

Clean your BBQ with an onion!

onion_grill.jpg  Wipe your grill clean without the chemical waste by rubbing an onion against the grate of the grill. Scrubbing a halved onion faced downwards on a heated grate will remove the grime and grit without requiring the hard and frustrating scrubbing of a Brillo pad. Plus, it's an affordable green alternative that won't cause putrid smells like most chemicals do. That is, as long as you like the smell of onions

Come Down to the Farm

School children invited to open day at St Lambert’s Hall Farm South Lincolnshire school children have been invited to take their lessons ‘outside’ on Wednesday 21 May when St Lambert’s Hall Farm opens its gates once again to 800 local pupils who will be given an insight into how the food they eat reaches their plates.

The event follows a successful open day held at Robert and Sue Oldershaw’s farm last year and not only will pupils be able to see and learn about the farm’s arable crops of British asparagus, strawberries, peas and onions but participate in a busy programme of ‘lessons’; from seed planting and crop harvesting to looking after livestock and even sheep shearing. Fishing, falconry and tending to the farm’s pigs and baby chicks are on the day’s ‘curriculum’ to give the pupils a better understanding of ‘life on the farm’ and talks include how machinery helps farm the land and the lifecycle of a potato.  Special guest appearance will be made by fruit and vegetable characters Arnie Apple, Gus the Asparagus Man, Bob Cob, Jaffa Orange and Freddie Fyffe.

Around 80 volunteer stewards from around the area will join in the fun on the 21st, ensuring that the children are safe and get the most out of their day.  Educational tools and equipment such as the food bus and a satellite guided tractor has been received from local and national companies including Doubledays and Waitrose.

Robert Oldershaw heads the event and says: “Last year was so successful that we not only wanted to do it again but give the children even more.  Understanding where and how food is grown is so important to us all and as farmers and lovers of the land we want to play our part in educating the children of the future.

Notes to Editors Photocall will be held at 11.15 am.  Photographers and film crews welcome.  Please contact Sue Oldershaw on tel 07977 567241 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. New Season Produce

It's that time of year when new season produce from Moulton Bulb starts to fill the supermarket shelves. In the next few weeks, new season British Fresh Green Garlic and British Supasweet onions will appear on our customers shelves.

Fresh Green Garlic is grown in Lincolnshire and harvested when it is at it's freshest, and then stored in a coldstore to maintain it's crisp fleshy green and white colour and subtle garlic flavour. It is ideal for using raw in salads or roasting whole in some tin foil on the barbeque.

Supasweet onions are at their freshest and mildest at this time of the year when harvested and packed within the minimum time to deliver that extra juicy crunch when used in salads.
