Plant onion sets (small onion bought from reputable garden centre) Sets are quicker to mature, are better in colder regions, less likely to be attacked by some pests and diseases and need less skill to grow.
Mid February to End of March as soon as conditions allow plant 4 inches apart into a free draining well fertilized firm seed bed in 8 inch rows. Push the sets into the ground and lightly cover with soil to discourage birds and mice. Do not be concerned about well covering them because as they grow they will push themselves to the top.
During dry periods keep watered and feed occasionally with a general purpose feed.
Harvest to eat as soon as onions are of a good size, possible July onwards, to store leave until tops are 100% fallen over then remove from soil and place into a dry ventilated area and leave to dry until tops are crispy dry. At which time the onions can be placed in a dry cool place and used through the winter.
