Farming & Countryside Open Day for SchoolsSt. Lambert’s Hall Farm, Weston Wednesday 20th May 2009 10am - 2.15pm
South Lincolnshire school children have been invited to take their lessons ‘outside’ on Wednesday 20th May when St Lambert’s Hall Farm opens its gates once again to 800 local pupils who will be given an insight into how the food they eat reaches their plates. The event follows a successful open day held at Robert and Sue Oldershaw’s farm last year and not only will pupils be able to see and learn about the farm’s arable crops of British asparagus, strawberries, peas and onions but participate in a busy programme of ‘lessons’; from seed planting and crop harvesting to looking after livestock and even sheep shearing. Fishing, falconry and tending to the farm’s pigs and baby chicks are on the day’s ‘curriculum’ to give the pupils a better understanding of ‘life on the farm’ and talks include how machinery helps farm the land and the lifecycle of selected vegetables. Around 80 volunteer stewards from around the area will join in the fun on the 20th, ensuring that the children are safe and get the most out of their day. Educational tools and equipment such as the food bus and a satellite guided tractor has been received from local and national companies including Doubledays and Waitrose. Robert Oldershaw heads the event and says: “Last year was so successful that we not only wanted to do it again but give the children even more. Understanding where and how food is grown is so important to us all and as farmers and lovers of the land we want to play our part in educating the children of the future.
